As a first-generation college student, the roadblocks that begin to surface as one begins their collegiate journey can be overwhelming. Although it is an amazing accomplishment for one to start college, it can be difficult navigating a space that is new and unknown. Becoming someone you’ve never been before as well as not having a person help guide you through it can create imposter-syndrome; for it is easy to believe that one is incapable or unworthy of such a great opportunity due to being the first to do so. The reality however, is that this uncomfortability we feel is not an indicator of incompetence, but rather fuel for our journey .
Allowing yourself to fully immerse into an uncomfortable emotion or experience provides you the ability to obtain personal growth, for sensitivity and vulnerability are essential within uncomfortability due to it establishing authenticity. Lean into the things that may scare you a little bit and trust the process, but above all else trust yourself. Below are a few tips to help maintain and upkeep a positive mindset:
Take your time and set your own pace.
It is easy to allow the competitive environment of the collegiate world to make
you think that you must overextend yourself in multiple areas within clubs and
organizations. However, this can easily lead to burnout. Be honest and realistic
with your time management to make sure that you are balanced and not
overfilling your plate.
Accept Change
Change is the only constant in our lives, and although it can be frustrating at
times, it is easier to accept than to deny. Be open to change but also be aware
when it is time to change an aspect in our lives as well. If anything or anyone is
disrupting your focus, growth, or time, it is possibly a sign that things need to be
reprioritized.
Ask for Help
It is essential to have a good support system that you can rely on when your
motivation is running low. Having others help reassure you and boost your
confidence can help you achieve your goals. You need people who care about
you and want the best for you in your corner. Make it a habit to ask for the
assistance of others from time to time.
